Chromecast with Google TV is still missing its Android 14 update, 3 months later

The Chromecast with Google TV got its Android 14 update earlier this year as promised, but Google quietly pulled that update from production and, three months later, we’re still waiting on it.

The update situation around Chromecast with Google TV was quite messy for a long time, but the device managed to get two major Android OS updates over its lifetime, the first being Android 12 back in 2022, and the second being Android 14 in March of this year.

Quickly after the Android 14 update rolled out, though, it was abundantly clear that it was riddled with issues.

At that point, Google quietly paused the rollout, with new users unable to download and install the update. Anyone who has already installed it is still able to continue using it, of course, but checking for updates no longer shows Android 14 as available to Chromecast with Google TV. The newer update carried the version number UTTC.241218.004, while Google still lists STTL.241013.003 as the latest available version.

This is likely the best decision for the sake of the experience on Chromecast devices, as Android OS updates typically don’t bring many user-facing changes. But the timeline here is what is surprising. After three months, one would expect the update to be available again. Google hasn’t communicated anything about the removal either, leading to some confusion around the update.

In our experience, the update works, but it is full of frustrating issues such as crashing apps. Users have also reported that external devices (including storage) no longer work, Wi-Fi sometimes doesn’t connect, and more.

Meanwhile, Walmart is currently rolling out the Android 14 update for its Google TV box, Onn 4K Pro, joining the Google TV Streamer as one of the only devices running the latest version. Android 16 for TVs was announced at Google I/O last month, and it’s hard to imagine that the Chromecast will ever see that update.
